Choosing Disease-resistant Roses
The best place to start is before you purchase. Consider the types of
diseases that have bothered your roses in the past: black spot, rust
and powdery mildew. Generally, Rugosa roses tend to relatively disease
resistant and very disease-resistant roses.
However, a disease-resistant rose that does well in one region or USDA
Zone will not necessarily fare as well in another. You can also decrease
the likelihood of disease by not overwatering or overfertilizing. Choosing
your hardy rose wisely ahead of time will also reduce the likelihood
that you will have to use expensive and sometimes powerful pesticides.
