Growing Roses in the Shade

Roses must have some sun to grow and bloom. Most roses need five to six hours of sun per day. But if you have filtered sunlight for a good portion of the day in part of your yard, then these roses may be just what you are looking for. Do not expect to grow roses under a tree. The success of a shade-tolerant rose will vary from one location to another, depending on very localized conditions, including reflected light from nearby buildings, warmth, soil conditions, tree roots competing for water and soil, and other variables.

See Peter Schneider's book Peter Schneider on Roses for a list of roses recommended to tolerate four hours of filtered sunglight per day.
