Prepare Now for Coddling Moths on Apples!
Right Now is the time to prepare for the number one pest of Apples and Pears...the Coddling Moth. Coddling moths lay the eggs that hatch into the worms that can destroy every apple in your crop!
Apple and Pear Growers...The time to prevent wormy apples and pears is Now! The most effective method of preventing this very destructive pest is available now, and can really save your crop. It is a two step process.
First, you need to place Coddling Moth Traps in your apple or pear tree right now. The traps come two to a pack, and they should be placed at eye level in your tree. The traps open into a tent shaped structure which you hang from the tree branches, and have an odor that attracts male coddling moths. Check for moths every 2 or 3 days, and when they start to appear, you begin to apply Spinosad.
Spinosad is a highly effective organic insecticide. According to the product label, it was derived from a naturally occurring soil dwelling bacterium that was collected from an abandoned rum distillery on a Caribbean Island in 1982. This unique bacterium was defined as a new species when it was discovered, and it has never been found in nature anywhere else in the world. Since being discovered, Spinosad has become a leading pesticide used by agriculture world wide in the production of organic produce.
It is important that you spray in the evenings, when bee and other pollinators are inactive. Captain Jack's Deadbug Brew is the trade name of the Spinosad we carry at Regan Nursery, and it is available as a Ready to Spray Trigger Sprayer, or as a pint concentrate.
