David Austin English Roses

Charles Darwin along with Brother Cadfael and Golden Celebration, have some of the largest blooms to be found in the English Rose line. The flowers are very full and rounded at first, then opening up to a shallow cup. They are a lovely shade of rich yellow - almost Old Gold - sometimes with lemony or sandy tints. It makes a most attractive, bushy and eye catching shrub that is very healthy and would be ideal towards the front of a mixed border. 41 petals

The buds of Claire Austin are a pale lemon opening to large, creamy white flowers. The bush has an arching habit and can be trained as a climber.

Constance Spry is one of the most beautiful Shrub Roses. Its magnificent clear pink blooms are of true old fashioned type and exceptionally large, with a luminous delicacy that is hard to compare with any other rose. It forms a lax-growing shrub of some 6 to 7 feet tall and as much across.
Although often used as a shrub, it makes one of the most glorious of all climbers; as anyone who has seen it at Mottisfont Abbey, will agree.
It has a strong myrrh fragrance; in fact, it was this rose that introduced the myrrh fragrance to the breeding of the English Roses. Non remondant, one glorious bloom in early summer, tolerates some shade.

Charming apricot rosettes with a fine fruity tea rose scent, for a glorious, perfumed display. Forms a tall, gently arching shrub, perfect for the back of the border, a wall or along the fence line.
Crown Princess Margareta can be grown as a climber to 10 feet . 120 petals

Darcey Bussell is one of the best and most healthy red roses 'we have bred to date' according to David Austin. Its beautiful flowers are produced freely and with excellent continuity. When young, their outer petals form a perfect ring around an inner cup; gradually opening out to form a perfect rosette. The colour is a deep rich crimson that takes on a tinge of mauve just before the petals drop. It has a pleasing, fruity fragrance with hints of green notes.
This rose, with its short, bushy growth, is an excellent shrub for the front of the border or for planting in formal rose beds. It will make an excellent plant for a large pot. It is our first fully double crimson to be released since the best selling William Shakespeare 2000 and is perfect for gardeners who would prefer a more compact shrub.
Darcey Bussell is the highly acclaimed ballerina. She was appointed principal at the Royal Ballet at the age of 20 and has danced in the title role of many ballets around the world. She has been honoured with many awards including the OBE in 1995.

Eglantynes flowers are quite large and a beautiful formation - the petals turning up at the edges to form a shallow saucer filled with small petals. The bush is medium in height and bushy, with nice foliage and good disease resistance.
It is sweetly fragrant - a charming and delicate Old Rose scent.

'Gentle Hermione' will form an attractive, rounded shrub of medium height with slightly arching stems. It has good disease resistance.
Starting as attractive, nicely rounded buds, the flowers gradually open to shallow cups with all their petals perfectly arranged. Their colour is pure pink with soft blush on the outside and a lovely pure pink at the centre..
This variety bears some of the most perfectly formed flowers of true Old Rose character.
It has a strong, warm, classic Old Rose scent with a hint of myrrh.

A tribute to the famous British garden designer. Large, well-filled rosettes are deep pink with a powerful damask fragrance, on a tall, very robust shrub.

Harlow Carr has an excellent bushy habit, maturing into an attractively rounded shrub with its flowers almost to ground level making it a good choice the front of the rose bed. The new foliage is bronze at first, later becoming green.
There is a strong, pure Old Rose fragrance that has been described as reminiscent of rose-based cosmetics.

Lichfield Angel has flowers which start as charming peachy pink cups, gradually opening to form neatly cupped rosettes. Each bloom has a perfect ring of creamy-apricot waxy petals enclosing numerous smaller petals. Eventually the petals turn back to form a large, domed, creamy-white flower. The overall effect in the mass in sunshine is almost pure white.
Lichfield Angel will form a vigorous, rounded shrub which, with its blooms nodding attractively on the branch, will make a fine sight.
It is very useful in a border, as it blends well with all other colours and will act as an intermediary between pinks and yellows.
The fragrance is generally light but has strong elements of clove at one stage.
Lichfield Angel is a limestone sculptured panel, from the 8th century, which was recently discovered in Lichfield Cathedral. It depicts the Archangel Gabriel and still bears the remnants of Saxon paint.

St. Swithun has very large, open-cupped blooms filled with frilly petals, in a lovely soft pink, fading to white at the edge of the petals.
The growth is tall and vigorous, with large, disease-resistant leaves. This rose may also be grown as a climber - in fact it is one of the best English Rose climbers.
St Swithun flowers freely, repeating very quickly and is particularly tough, reliable and healthy.
There is a strong pure myrrh fragrance, typical of the English Roses.
Summer prune to maintain it as a shrub and encourage quicker repeat flowering.

Strawberry Hill bears medium sized, pure rose pink, cupped rosettes of superb quality. Their colour gradually pales to a lighter pink at the edges of the petals, eventually exposing glimpses of yellow stamens at the centre. The blooms are beautiful at all stages.

The growth is tall, vigorous and rather informal, with small clusters of blooms held on slightly arching brances. Strawberry Hill is very healthy with glossy, dark green foliage. This is a wonderful choice for a position to the rear of a mixed border, or for a border of shrub roses.

Strawberry Hill was awarded the Prix d'Honneur for fragrance from Nantes in 2007.

Teasing Georgia is a yellow rose of delicate beauty; the flowers are of a particularly pleasing cupped formation. The centre petals are in the form of a rich, deep yellow cup, while the outer petals fall back and fade to palest yellow providing a most pleasing, two-tone effect.
The growth is strong but graceful, displaying the flowers nicely.
Pleasant, medium-strong Tea Rose fragrance. Good disease-resistance and repeat-flowering.
May need some summer pruning if grown as a shrub.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles sports large fragrant flowers of bright crimson colouring. They are of a nice, deeply cupped shape in the early stages; the petals turn back to give a less formal but still attractive flower. They bend over with their weight, to give an elegant effect. The growth is robust, bushy and spreading and the leaves large and dark green.
May need some summer pruning if grown as a shrub.

The Alnwick Rose is a pretty rich pink, with cup shaped buds gradually opening to a deeply cupped flower; later developing into a broad, full-petalled, shallow cup of a soft pink which is paler at the outer edges - a most pleasing progression.
The flowers are beautiful at all stages; this illustrates very well the great variety of form to be found in the Old Rose style.
'The Alnwick Rose' has nice rounded, bushy growth and produces its bloom intermittently from early summer to the onset of frost. Plentiful green foliage ideally complements the flower.
There is a good Old Rose fragrance with just a hint of raspberry.

The Generous Gardener is a rose of delicate charm -its flowers being beautifully formed; their colour a soft glowing pink at the centre, shading to palest pink on the outer petals. When the petals open they expose numerous stamens, providing an almost water lily-like effect.
It has strong, elegantly arching growth with polished dark green foliage.
This rose would produce a wonderful effect towards the back of the border. It will also make an excellent climber. Like 'Mortimer Sackler', it is highly disease-resistant.
There is a strong and delicious fragrance with aspects of Old Rose, musk and myrrh.

Wildeve is a particularly robust and healthy rose, producing long, arching branches which eventually form a bushy, mounding shrub. It flowers freely, with excellent repeating. The flower buds are blush pink at first, later opening to reveal flowers of blush touched with apricot. They form a perfect rosette shape which is distinctly quartered.
Wildeve is a highly versatile variety, with many of the features of a good ground cover rose, combined with all the quality of flower of an English Rose. It is an ideal choice for a prime position in the border or may be grown in a large pot or container. Like most English Roses, Wildeve may be grown in partial shade, providing it is not positioned underneath the branches of a tree. It makes a useful hedging rose or can be trained against a short fence, where its blooms are sure to be admired.
It has a lovely, fresh medium strong fragrance.
